Mountain View, California-based Google announced today on the Official Google Mobile Blog that the Google Maps mobile application for Android has been updated to version 4.5, which includes a few new useful features such as Walking Navigation, Street View Smart Navigation, and a new Google Maps search bar.
Walking Navigation
As the name suggests, Google has combined its turn-by-turn navigation system with walking directions into a new service. Users can now get turn-by-turn directions when walking. Do take into account that the service is currently in beta, which means that it should be used carefully.
The great thing about this is that in addition to voice directions, Walking Navigation will also vibrate when a turn has to be made. In addition, the map will automatically rotate when as the turn is made. The service uses satellite view by default. GPS is required to be on.
Street View Smart Navigation
Similar to the computer version, Street View Smart Navigation for mobile allows users to move more easily and quickly when using Street View by simply dragging the little Pegman to the desired area. Google indicates that an update for the “Street View on Google Maps” app in Android Market needs to be downloaded separately.
New Google Maps search bar
Version 4.5 of Google Maps introduces a new search bar at the top of the application, which allows users to quickly find their location, enable layers, search, open Places, and more.
Both the Google Maps 4.5 application and the Street View on Google Maps add-on are now available for Android 1.6 or higher in the Android Market.
